Blue Solutions, based in France, is the only industrial producer of solid-state batteries for EVs

Blue Solutions is supplying Solid-State Batteries to companies such as Daimler, which uses these batteries in its electric buses. Copper, aluminum, lithium, polymers, lithium salt, iron phosphate, and carbon were used in the lithium-metal polymer (LMP) battery, which has achieved market maturity since 2012.

Monfort believes that other companies working on solid-state batteries “underestimate the time it takes from the first samples to real series production.” among other issues.

Jean-Luc Monfort, Managing Director of Blue Solutions, spoke with Elective, an industry service, about innovative research, the rising customer base, and the numerous applications for solid-state battery technology.

However, the ultimate breakthrough for solid-state batteries would only be possible if they can run at “room temperature” or around 20 degrees. “We’re not there yet,” Monfort admits, adding that based on the application, Blue Solutions’ LMP batteries must still be heated to 50 to 80 degrees.

The price per kWh power of LMP batteries is equivalent to lithium-ion batteries, which is another bonus.

According to the company, when various other criteria are taken into consideration, such as range and warranty, the company’s batteries are “often much more viable versus lithium-ion batteries with certain applications and markets.” according to the company.

“We produce 24 hours a day, seven days a week”.

Blue Solutions at present operates two assembly lines in two cities, one in Quimper, Brittany, and the other in Montreal, Quebec, each with a production capacity of 500 MWh per year, according to Monfort. “with a four-shift production, that is, we produce 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”.

In Quimper, the company is currently constructing the third line to reach 1.5 GWh as soon as possible.

However, since the batteries must be preheated even before the vehicle can go on tour, the battery tech is not appropriate for the general market. Hence, it is more suitable for consumers that have cars that are used frequently.

“Buses are predestined for this, but also vans on the last mile or industrial vehicles in ports and airports are well suited for this application.” adds Monfort.

Many businesses around the world have a keen interest in Blue Solutions’ batteries. The company expects to disclose more new customers during the year, including vans and bigger trucks.

Monfort emphasizes the importance of battery production in Europe. Currently, local firms are primarily leaving the market to Asian players.

Blue Solutions has increased its efforts to join professional organizations and associations in Europe because it is “convinced that we need to participate in the European battery ecosystem”

They have “direct contact with the EU Commission”, and they are members of the Executive Committees of both the Battery European Partnership Association (BEPA) and the RECHARGE Association, which deal with battery regulation.

The group is also a member of the EBA 250 (European Battery Alliance) and “of course also participates in the new European Commodities Initiative, launched in 2020.”

“We plan to deliver these batteries to industrial-level OEMs in 2026,”

“Build solid-state batteries that can run at 20 degrees Celsius or even lower temperatures” will be the next primary objective in the advancement of solid-state battery technology.

Blue Solutions began this initiative a few years earlier and has already developed room-temperature batteries on a laboratory level. Monfort said.
