Bold New GMC Hummer EV SUV revealed | To hit the road by 2024

Say Hello to the GMC Hummer EV SUV

The SUV version comes in the wake of the big reveal of the 2024 GMC Hummer EV pickup truck in October.

The 2024 Hummer EV SUV was virtually unveiled on Saturday during the NCAA Final Four tournament, essentially handing the ball to the Ford Bronco, the Jeep Wrangler hybrid, and Rivian’s upcoming all-electric SUV based on the RT1.

GMC unveiled its new electric Hummer SUV, based on the previously announced truck version, however it won’t be available until 2023 as a 2024 model. GMC was already teasing the electric SUV for a while, and that day has finally come.

The SUV combines the cool tech and versatility of the Hummer EV Pick Up truck with a hint of old-school Hummer H2 nostalgia.

As far as the exterior design on the GMC Hummer EV SUV goes, except for the enclosed back end, the design appears to be predominantly derived from the truck itself. We have an expansive cargo area with a spare tire placed on the tailgate, and the rear three-quarter view is reminiscent of a Hummer H3.

It has the same imposing stance as its Hummer descendants. However, the side view portrays a far stubbier look. The pickup will come standard with a wide front trunk or Frunk, sliding glass for the tailgate, a Targa front roof panel, and T-Tops for the second row. These Targa panels and T-tops can be placed in the trunk.

The Hummer EV SUV and pickup interior will essentially be the same, with room for five occupants. The simplistic upright dashboard is dominated by a colossal 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen as well as a 12.3-inch virtual instrument cluster screen.

The touchscreen, like the pickup, will use the UnReal engine, a standard video-game software, to display the 3D motion graphics to show what the SUV is doing while offroad in real-time. The rear section is new, with sizable cargo space.

GM has not yet released a length or cargo capacity figure, but given the extra overhang on the pickup, expect the SUV to be slightly over 200 inches long.

Irrespective of trim, GM’s Ultium platform with 800v capability would be under the skin, excluding the entry-level model, which will have a 400v system. The range varies between 250 miles for the base trim to more than 300 miles for higher-tier models.

Installing the Comprehensive Off-Road kit will reduce the range to around 280 miles, but GMC was keen to point out that these are all guesstimates. And, with almost two years before the Hummer SUV goes up for sale, there will be plenty of opportunities to develop the Electric SUV further.

The SUV sports an identical three-motor electric configuration as seen on the pickup, along with the option of a cheaper two-motor variant expected later. GMC rates the tri-motor Hummer EV SUV with up to 830 horsepower; however, it won’t pack the same punch as the pickup (619 kilowatts). This is decreased from the truck’s 1,000 hp (746 kW), but torque remains strong at 11,500 pound-feet (15,592 Newton-meters).

This puts the GMC Hummer EV SUV in line with some heavy-duty diesel pickups, which would still be impressive for any application, let alone a luxury SUV.

Like the Hummer EV pickup truck, the SUVs will be equipped with the CrabWalk feature, which uses the usable four-wheel steering system to maneuver sideways to navigate difficult obstacles and steer in narrow spaces.

GMC will also sell its intuitive hands-free Super Cruise highway driver-assist system, increasing the ride height to 15.9 inches from the standard 9.9 inches. It will include the Watts to Freedom launch mode, which is essentially a cool party trick that will propel the SUV  from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

Except for the base model, the GMC Hummer EV SUV production will begin in late 2021 at the manufacturer’s Detroit-Hamtramck facility. Still, the SUV will enter the lineup in early 2023, with both the two-motor 2X starting at $89,995, as well as the three-motor 3X starting at $99,995. The Edition 1 launch variant will begin at $105,595 and goes up to $110,595 with off-road extras.

Bear in mind that this was just a 90-second teaser from GMC, and in this short video, we got a peek at the outside of the car and a side-by-side comparison with the Hummer truck; more info to come shortly. As the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV hits the market, GM could provide more details.
